What is narcolepsy?

Narcolepsy is a chronic (lifelong) sleep disorder characterized by a deregulation of the sleep/wake system. It is called a neurological disorder because it affects the brain and nerves. In narcoleptic patients, messages about when to sleep and when to be awake are not managed properly, resulting in unexpected sleep attacks during the day (excessive daytime sleepiness) and often non restorative sleep at night.
